| The Friends of Historic Kingston will mark the closing of the Joseph Tubby retrospective with a final viewing and refreshments in the museum gallery on Sunday, October 26, 1-4 pm. Exhibit curator Sanford Levy of Jenkinstown Antiques in New Paltz will be present to offer information and answer questions about Tubby (1821-1896) who lived in the village of Rondout and was noted for his regional landscapes painted in the Hudson River School style. Tubby’s finest landscapes feature scenes of Rondout, Esopus, the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. A close friend of the noted Hudson River School artist Jervis McEntee, a Rondout resident also, the self-taught Tubby was influenced by McEntee, as well as by Frederic Church and Kingston artist John Vanderlyn.
Tubby’s paintings were exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1850-1860, and later at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Today his work is found in the New York Historical Society, Smith College Museum of Art, Senate House State Historic Site and in private collections. The retrospective features works from both public institutions and private collections.
The closing event is free and open to the public. The Friends of Historic Kingston Museum Gallery, located on the corner of Wall-Main Streets in uptown Kingston, is open Saturday and Sunday, 1-4 pm. thru October. It will reopen on May 2, 2009 with a new exhibit focused on New York State’s Quadricentennial Celebration. For more information, call (845) 339-0720, or visit www.fohk.org
