Welcome
to Jenkinstown Antiques. Owner Sanford Levy opened the original shop in the historical
village of New Paltz, New York, in 1974, and has spent most of his life working
in this beautiful Hudson Valley region. Levy has a particular love and knowledge
of items from the Hudson Valley, and this is reflected in the unique merchandise
offered. He
is a well-known dealer in regional artists such as D.F.Hasbrouck, T.B.Pope, Michael
Kelly and the Kingston artist Julia Dillon, and he also specializes in furniture
from the Valley, including Kasten and country pieces in original surfaces. The
shop is always filled with a wide array of accessories including textiles, china,
stoneware and glassware. The Shops
The
original shop in the clapboard Hallock house, which was saved from demolition
and reconstructed on the property in 1986, is now a wonderful period showcase
for a select group of 18th through 20th Century antiques and art. The property
is also Levy's residence, the 1726 Freer House, a Huguenot stone house that was
meticulously restored using period materials and techniques over the last thirty
years. These two historical structures share the land with a 1790's summer kitchen,
extensive vegetable and flower gardens, the Plattekill Creek and the owner's small
family of heritage breed sheep. This shop is easily reached from the New York
State Thruway, and as of July 1, 2004 is open by appointment only.
The
newer location, in operation since July 2004, at the intersection of Old Route
299 and North Ohioville Road, is in an area just outside of the Village of New
Paltz once known in the 1820's as Helltown. This building, located at what has
historically always been a bustling intersection, has been an active storefront
run by many local families over the years. The area, now known as Ohioville, has
always been an established community, once having a local post office, blacksmith
shop and hotel, and a stop for the New Paltz-Highland trolley in 1900. The Helltown
shop is located just ¼ mile from the New York State Thruway - please stop
in and enjoy looking through the eclectic assortment of 18th - 20th Century antiques
and art.
